馬勒（Gustav Mahler）在1893年曾言，前兩闕交響曲凝淬了他所有的內省與生活歷練，因此理解馬勒的音樂宜著手自他的世界觀，尤其是基督宗教與宗教哲學的面向。1896年，單身時代的馬勒在寫給Annie Sommerfeld的信中提到，他的《第三號交響曲》（1894-1896）是他最好、最成熟之作，他以此總結他的「苦難三連作」（Trilogie der Leidenschaft）。意即馬勒以《第三號交響曲》為《第一號交響曲》（1888）、《第二號交響曲》（1888-1894）作結，從中可以看出死亡、復活與成聖（apotheosis）的脈絡。少有以此視角探討馬勒交響曲的專文，本論文將以此觀
